WordPress Security Basics: A Practical Checklist

Simple maintenance habits that help reduce avoidable WordPress security risks.

WordPress Security Basics: A Practical Checklist

Website security is an ongoing practice, not a single plugin or setting. A few consistent habits can reduce common risks and make problems easier to recover from.

Keep the site maintained

Install WordPress, theme, and plugin updates after reviewing compatibility and keeping a verified backup. Remove themes and plugins that are no longer used.

Use strong account controls

  • Use unique passwords and a password manager.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication where available.
  • Give each user only the permissions needed for their role.
  • Remove access promptly when a collaborator no longer needs it.

Review plugins carefully

Choose maintained plugins from reputable sources. Check the developer, update history, support activity, and permissions before installing. Avoid plugins that offer file-manager or server access beyond the needs of your site.

Plan for recovery

Understand what your host backs up, how often backups run, how long they are retained, and how a restoration is requested. A backup should be considered reliable only after its restoration process has been tested.

Watch for unexpected changes

Review administrator accounts, security alerts, and unusual site behavior. If you suspect compromise, contact your hosting provider and follow a documented incident-response process.
